Từ nối (linking words) trong IELTS Writing: dùng sao cho tự nhiên

Từ nối giúp bài viết liền mạch và là một phần của tiêu chí Coherence & Cohesion. Nhưng có một nghịch lý: bài band 5–6 thường có nhiều từ nối hơn bài band 7–8. Lý do là người viết band thấp đặt từ nối ở đầu mọi câu, còn người viết band cao dùng ít hơn mà đúng chỗ hơn.

- Although / Even though: mặc dù - Although zoos protect some species, many animals suffer in captivity.
- Whereas / While: trong khi - Older people prefer newspapers, whereas teenagers get news online.
- On the other hand: mặt khác - On the other hand, online courses lack face-to-face contact.
Nguyên nhân, kết quả
- because of / due to: do, vì (+ danh từ) - Due to rising rents, many young people live with their parents.
- As a result: kết quả là - As a result, traffic in the city centre has fallen.
- Therefore: vì vậy - Therefore, governments should invest in renewable energy.
- This leads to: điều này dẫn đến - This leads to higher levels of stress at work.

Liên kết mà không cần từ nối
Người viết band cao nối ý bằng đại từ và từ thay thế: This trend…, Such policies…, These measures…. Câu sau nhắc lại ý câu trước một cách tự nhiên, nên không cần Moreover ở đầu câu. Hãy thử: trong bài viết tiếp theo, mỗi đoạn dùng tối đa 2 từ nối ở đầu câu.
Câu hỏi thường gặp
Dùng nhiều từ nối có được điểm cao không?
Không. Band descriptors nhắc rõ việc dùng từ nối máy móc hoặc quá mức là đặc điểm của band thấp. Dùng đúng chỗ quan trọng hơn dùng nhiều.
"Firstly, Secondly, Finally" có nên dùng không?
Được, nhưng đừng dùng cho mọi đoạn. Thử bắt đầu thân bài bằng câu chủ đề nêu thẳng ý chính.
